This Bible question comes from Caleb. He asks:
"I was just reading in Mark 3:28 and it mentions blaspheming the Holy Spirit? What does this mean? I have heard several different takes on it. Some say it means never accepting Christ, others that is swearing him off and believing he doesn't exist. Yet I have heard others say this verse proves that those who commit suicide won't go to heaven. I personally believe it is the first of these, but what are your thoughts on the matter?"
Consider the following verses:
Mark 3:28-29 - “Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation”
What is "blasphemy"?
- a word that means "to slander, or speak against"
- comes from two Greek words which mean "to hurt" + "the fame or reputation of"
- in a religious context, "showing contempt or lack of reverence for God"
